How Does the Feeling of “Understanding” Emerge, Waver, and Transform?
Do we truly understand the world?
Life and death, science, history, others, even ourselves—we do not fully understand any of them. Yet we continually build relationships with the world through partial and provisional understandings.
Through painting, I explore how human recognition is continuously generated, destabilized, and renewed.
When reflecting on this question, I repeatedly return to dinosaurs and prehistoric life. No one has ever seen these creatures alive. Our sense of “understanding” them has been constructed through layers of fossils, scientific knowledge, imagination, illustrated books, films, and commercial imagery. To me, this process reveals both our desire to approach the unknown and our tendency to temporarily stabilize incomplete forms of recognition.
To examine this question on the surface of a painting, I begin with images of dinosaurs and prehistoric organisms, then bring together fragments that belong to different temporalities and systems of recognition: drawings made with my child, fragments of language, news images, and scenes from everyday life. These fragments interfere with one another, giving rise to temporary forms of understanding. Yet these forms never become fixed. The painting becomes a site where recognition is generated, unsettled, and continually transformed.
This instability of understanding is also present in the act of making. Drawing with my child is an especially important point of departure in my practice. In those moments, the boundaries between self and other, intention and chance become ambiguous, allowing images to emerge that belong fully to neither of us. I later intervene in this entangled state, reorganizing relationships within the composition. Misreadings and transformations inevitably occur in this process. Rather than correcting these shifts, I seek to preserve them as traces of understanding in motion.
Within this practice, Nihonga is far more than a technique. Its surface—paper made from plant fibers, mineral pigments ground from stone, and animal glue as a binding agent—is itself a place where life and mineral, nature and human intervention intersect. Mineral pigments embody geological time, and the repeated layering of these particles quietly resonates with the slow accumulation through which fossils are formed within the earth. Time itself accumulates within the material, and images emerge upon those layers. For me, recognition does not exist solely within the mind; it is generated through the relationships between material, body, and time. This is why the materiality of Nihonga is inseparable from the questions I pursue.
Nihonga is also a cultural accumulation of time. Throughout its history, it has continuously inherited and transformed techniques and modes of seeing. By layering new images onto the picture plane, I am not only building material strata, but also connecting contemporary images and systems of recognition to the accumulated visual history of Japanese painting.
What draws me to Japanese painting is its capacity to allow multiple temporalities, spaces, viewpoints, and scales to coexist within a single image. Yet what interests me is not harmony. Rather, I am interested in a condition in which different times, systems of recognition, and images interfere with one another while maintaining their differences, leaving meaning fundamentally unresolved. Dinosaurs, children’s drawings, news images, classical paintings, and fragments of everyday life are not unified into a single narrative. Instead, each retains its own temporality while continuously forming new relationships within the painting.
For me, painting is not a means of explaining the world. It is an event in which different temporalities, materials, forms of life, histories, and images encounter one another, allowing human recognition to be renewed. Through the experience of viewing the work, the feeling of “understanding” is suspended, and new forms of recognition begin to emerge. Creating the conditions for that emergence is what my painting is.
